Title | Letter from Jean François De Luc, in Fort St George, Madras to his father Jean André De Luc, chez Mr Hudson in Pimlico, London |
Date | 12 Jun 1785 |
Description | Explaining that he had written this letter in case the other three more detailed ones he had previously sent were lost. As a result, it is a brief summary of what had happened. Jean François mentions that he had left the Cape of Good Hope after spending some time there and had arrived in India eight weeks later. He was hoping to find good employment on moving to Bengal in about a month, which he really longed to do and from where he would further inform his father of how was coping financially. He complains that he was struggling to afford what were considered the essentials for his rank. Living in India was proving to be very expensive, due to all the servants one seemed to need, the fact that one could not walk anywhere and the substantial number of clothes needed due to the climate and the level of cleanliness expected of the English. |
