DescriptionPhotocopies of eleven letters, all but two of them from Lieutenant Andrew Hardy RN (1774-1802) to his father, Simeon Henry Hardy of Cork; a draft memorial from the former seeking promotion; and five colour photographs of family miniatures. Some of these letters were published in Christopher Lloyd, 'New light on the mutiny at the Nore', The Mariner's Mirror, volume 46, November 1960, a copy of which is with these papers. Others include a letter of 1801, off Copenhagen, describing the great naval battle in which Hardy's ship, the Desire, took part, with modern transcript; three letters written in 1802, during the short peace, from the Rosario, on which Andrew Hardy was serving; a letter from Simeon Droz to his cousin S H Hardy in October 1781, from Cossimbazar, on the prospects of the latter's brother, Peter, 'safe arrived in Calcutta and in the House of our cousin Tom Boileau who is doing well in the Law line'; and a letter from Thomas Hardy, Andrew's brother, to his father S H Hardy describing the capture of his merchantman in the Bay of Biscay by privateers in 1802, his imprisonment in Spain, subsequent stay in Oporto and return to Waterford.

The photographs are of a miniature of a naval officer with modern identification as 'Andrew Hardy', of a miniature of a clergyman with modern identification 'Bishop', an unidentified miniature, possibly also of Andrew Hardy, a miniature of a young lady, no identification and a miniature of a soldier, also with no identification.
