| Description | Comprises: i) Diary of Adam Roumieu (29 pp). In these pages Roumieu has kept a record of daily events in the Hospital which concerned him as Steward, and of orders and resolutions of the Management Committee. The great majority of the entries concern breaches of discipline and consequent punishments, which are also recorded in the minutes. In the later years of the diary some gifts, tax matters and financial transactions are mentioned, and a few notes relating to servants. In 1752, Roumieu records the receipt of an 8-day clock for the Directors' room, as well as the portrait of Lord Ligonier. In February and March 1750 apparent earthquake shocks are reported in some details. A loose paper gives a note of an attempted burglary at the Hospital in 1765. ii) The remainder of the book has been used, from the other end, reversed, as a detailed register of property of deceased inmates, each small inventory being certified by the signatures or marks of the assessors. Their possessions are mostly clothing, but occasionally include money or, e.g., silver spoons. The dates covered are 1770-1817. |
