DescriptionJean Nicholas Le Mettais, a 70 year old man, requests to be admitted to the Hospital. He was born in Havre-de-Grâce but came to England to avoid persecution 52 years previously. He was a sailor in the Royal Navy for three years on the Cutter Hunter. When not at sea, Jean Nicholas has been a member of the French Church of the Artillery and of St Jean. He suffers from several conditions so can no longer work and has been forced to live in the workhouse of Whitechapel for the past two months. He has recently been told that he will have to leave as a large number of people who are more ill than him are to be admitted. As a result anyone, anyone who is able to walk will be asked to leave. A note at the end by J L Chirol. Pastor of the French Church of Le Quarré and St Jean states that the contents of the petition are true, dated 28 March 1813. The petition is also signed by P Guillemard, James Barbet, S Beuzeville, G Jean Cazaly and Jean Nicholas Le Mettais himself.
