Her father was Pierre Du Bois and her grandfather, Jean Du Bois, was born in Normandy but moved to England to avoid religious persecution. Her paternal uncle and aunt were both residents of the French Hospital and passed away there. Marie suffers from several conditions including poor eyesight; as a result, she cannot find enough work as a silkweaver to be financially independent.
