DescriptionThese petitions are evidently, for the most part, haphazard survivals from a much larger number. Most of them were found in bundles, but some were used as wrappers for other bundles or as memorandum slips. They are in the form of letters, but usually written by professional letter-writers, who were commonly employed to draft formal petitions of various kinds for the illiterate or semi-literate.
