Description | Mary Burroughs, a 70 year old widow, requests to be admitted to the Hospital. She was born on 6 June 1774. Her parents were John Colin and Magdeline Ballie, French Protestants who fled to avoid religious persecution. Magdeline Ballie was originally from Artis, in Normandy. Mary is a silkweaver but can no longer work due to poor eyesight. The petition bears Mary Burroughs' mark and is signed by Jeremiah Ward. A note at the back states that the petitioner's aunt had been forcibly placed in a French convent by members of the Catholic clergy and had only been released after the Revolution, in 1792. Mary's father had escaped to Jersey to avoid being educated by Catholic priests. Petition n. 1259. |
