TitleCase book of beneficiaries ('Vieux Livre de Cas des pauvres francois Protestants a Spittlefields, 1739')
Date1739-1741
DescriptionThis book is a register containing entries for 250 families to whom 'portions' of soup and bread were allotted during 1739-1741, the period of the extremely severe winter of 1738-1740 and its aftermath.
The information given generally includes names, addresses, and ages of the parents (or in many cases the mother, the father being dead or absent), the number and ages (but not names) of children, and the number of portions granted, often amended later. There are a number of notes, chiefly of death or departure, examples of which are quoted in Marmoy's paper (Proceedings of the Huguenot Society (London: Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland), vol. XXIII, p. 145).
The entries are on 121 numbered folios, but ff 5-7 have been torn out, and parts of ff 8, 52 and 53. At the beginning of the book there was an index on unnumbered leaves, of which only the last two pages (index S to V) remain.
