AdminHistory | On 31 January 1688 by letters patent of James II a brief was issued renewing for one year the former patent of 5 March 1686, with one small but significant variation bearing on the point of conformity: the words 'established both in Church and State' which appear in the brief of 1686 are omitted from the brief of 1688. Also in the accounts of the French committee recipients of grants are not certified as conformists; they are described merely as 'necessitous'. As before many eminent persons were appointed Commissioners; and five to form a quorum, and all monies collected were to be paid into the Chamber of London. The greater parts of the payments out went to the Treasurer of the French Committee. The amount collected to January 1690 was £19,634.19.9 3/4d. Thereafter the account in the Chamber of London was combined with that for the brief of 1688 and the total of the two up to December 1695 is given as £63.713.2.3. |
