AdminHistory | The Collegiate Division was formed in 1975 at the time when the Area Training Organisation (ATO) ceased to exist. The Division's specific responsibility for the co-ordination and distribution of courses has been taken over temporarily by the Teacher Education Advisory Committee on the Institute's initiative until a new regional body set up by the government takes its place - see IE/2/TEC for these papers. After a review of courses in 1979 the University of London decided that validation of degree courses in associated institutions should cease after the 1983 entry.
The Division consisted of 3 departments: 1. Collegiate Office - Provided a service for some of the principle committees of the Institute concerned with courses in associated colleges including Academic Board and Council (Council responsible to UoL Senate) Responsible for some of the functions originally carried out by the ATO including vetting applications from associated colleges for Recognised Teachers Status, co-ordination of teaching practice (through Advisory Committee on College/School Relations), liaison with local authorities (through conference of LEAs), matters relating to qualified teacher status and teaching practice assessment (through Joint Professional Committee), and the distribution and rationalisation of initial and in-service teacher education courses (through TEAC). Provided Secretariat support for TEAC Considered proposals for teacher education courses from all public sector and voluntary colleges in the London and Homes Counties region and makes recommendations to DES Similar to a central registry and information office for the constituent colleges Student registration and scrutiny of applications Prospective student enquiries
2. Collegiate Committees Department serviced joint committees
3. Examinations Department Provided a similar service to the Board of Examiners to examine students at the end of their course (also at the end of each year of course) Arranged meetings of the Boards, examination timetables, created the passlists, and informed students of their results |
