AdminHistory | This Committee was established 1 September 1949, when the Institute of Education became part of the Area Training Organisation and adopted a new constitution.
It was responsible for managing the ‘central activity' of the Institute. It oversaw the management and expenditure of all funds, the appointment of staff and made recommendations about appointment to University chairs, readerships and about recognised teacher status.
The Committee consisted of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of London, the Director of the Institute of Education and twenty other persons appointed annually from amongst the Council and Central Academic Board. Sir Ronald Adam was Chairman until 1967, when he was succeeded by Lord Fulton who was in turn succeeded by Sir Brian Windeyer in 1974. Sir John Ellis took over as Chairman in 1984.
The Committee of Management was replaced by the Council when the Institute was granted a Royal Charter in 1987. |
