AdminHistoryIn 1934 the Carnegie Corporation made a grant of $67,500 to the Institute to establish and support an international centre for three years. This was the Overseas Division, also called the Division of Overseas Students. This included the recruitment of eight Carnegie Fellows each year from the Dominions and the appointment of an Adviser to co-ordinate overseas work.

The Carnegie grant was to fund the department, and to fund the Fellows
Also called Division of Overseas Students, 1939 by Robert Lester
The payments increased from 3 to 6 at some point and ran from 1934 - 1938 then the 1939 grant was postponed until 1945. It looks like the final grant was sometime around 1949 with fellowships still being possible for the next few years due to a surplus of funds.

According to Fred Clarke (IE/OSD/1/1) there were 3 main parts to the overseas division -
1. The Colonial Department
2. The Dominions group (the Carnegie Fellows being the core of this group but not its entirety)
3. The Department of English as a Foreign Language
