AdminHistoryThe Centre was set up at the Institute in 1979 with the support of the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) for the national and international study of issues in race and culture. It was not attached to any single department at the Institute but worked across departments to design and implement educational strategies appropriate for a multicultural society and able to counteract racism. Its role was to advise, facilitate, co-ordinate, teach and tutor and provided courses at all levels: initial and in-service teacher -training, higher degree courses and research. It had well established links with Local Education Authorities (LEAs) and made provision for teachers, inspectors, advisers and education administrators. It also helped develop, and participated in, networks of nation and international contacts with individuals and agencies who are working towards intercultural education and to eliminate racism and xenophobia.
