Description	Jean Floud was appointed Senior Lecturer in Sociology of Education and came to the IOE from LSE. This folder contains correspondence between others at the Institute about her appointment but no correspondence with or from Jean Floud herself. There is much discussion about who they were going to appoint as the Chair of Sociology of Education following the retirement of Lester Smith. The outcome of the discussion was to leave the position of Chair vacant and instead appoint ‘a younger person in the Senior Lecturer grade. This was Jean Floud and she was appointed in 1953 as Senior Lecturer in Sociology of Education. A Department of Sociology brochure for 1984 – 1985 (IE/PUB/10/15) states “Karl Mannheim was head of the department until his death early in 1947. The post was held by W O Lester-Smith between 1949 and 1953, when he was replaced by Jean Floud as Senior Lecturer in Sociology of Education. Between 1946 to 1961 there was just one member of staff in the department. In 1963 Professor Basil Bernstein joined the department and the Sociological Research Unit was established during the same year.”
