| Description | Index cards for international students at the Institute of Education [IOE] from 1935 to the late 1970s. A card at the front of the first box reads 'This index contains the names of all oversea students (exclusive of the Colonial Department) who have been registered for full-time courses since 1935.'
Information on cards includes name; date of birth; previous qualifications/work place/position; sometimes places they went on to work qualification gained at IOE; tutor at IOE; some funding information such as Carnegie Fellows and British Scholar may also be recorded.
The cards are ordered alphabetically by country; Box 1 A - C. Including; Aden, Yemen; Basutoland now Kingdom of Lesotho; British Honduras now Belize; Burma now Myanmar; Cameroons now Cameroon. Box 2 C - G. Including; Ceylon now Sri Lanka; Congo/Republic of the Congo; Czechoslovakia now Czech Republic (Czechia) and Slovakia; United Arab Republic, Egypt; Eire, Republic of Ireland; Formosa now Taiwan. Box 3 G - I. Including; Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. Box 4 I - N. Including; Jugoslavia, now Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia; Malaya, now Malaysia; New Hebrides, now Republic of Vanuatu. Students from Palestine have been filed under Israel. Box 5 N - S. Including; North Borneo, now Sabah, Malaysia; Northern Rhodesia now Republic of Zambia; Nyasaland now Republic of Malawi; Rhodesia now Zimbabwe; Sabah, Malaysia; Sarawak, Malaysia. Box 6 S - U. Including Swaziland now Eswatini; Turkey and U.K. cards are not in alphabetical order. Box 7 U - Z. Including U.S.S.R.; West Cameroon; Yugoslavia (see also box 4 'Jugoslavia'); Zanzibar, Tanzania. |
