Description | Papers of Elcena Nelson, also known as 'Maimie' or 'Cena', who studied for a Teachers' Diploma at the Institute of Education from 1943-1944. She had previously graduated from King's College in French and German before going to the IOE.
Rather than an institutional student record file, this is a file of Elcena Nelson's personal papers from her time at the IOE, mainly consisting of her handwritten notes taken during the course. These papers were later donated to the IOE archives. The notes are subdivided into separate topics which include the following sections: 'Principles of Education'; psychology; 'The English Educational System'; teaching languages; 'Health Education'; 'Statistics'; and 'Religion in Schools'.
This file also includes the following documents:
- a typed notification from the Board of Education that Elcena Nelson is now a certified teacher; - a black-and-white photograph of her graduation; - two small black-and-white passport-style photographs of her; - typed references from her tutors at the IOE, and at King's College; - printed booklets of instructions for tests regarding 'The Simplex Group Intelligence Scale' and the 'Kelvin Measurement of Mental Ability'; - a printed booklet entitled 'Education Bill: Explanatory Memorandum by the President of the Board of Education', December 1943 (Cmnd 6492). |
