| Description | Various materials collected as part of the research for the book 'The Inspectors' Calling'. Most of this material was not used in the book, but formed a more general set of working papers.

Some explanation may be needed for these papers. They have no status other than as working papers, temporary, incomplete, as the ms notes and some few fading photo-copies suggest. They comprise extracts drawn from the HMI personal accounts, attempts at overviews, aimed at giving some shape to the quotations as various themes and topics emerged; notes derived from more general reading; and some 'realia'. In the event very few were put to active use. Their inclusion here is intended to give some indication of the way they were quarried, first to suggest a collective 'agenda' within the 'map' to be found in [KIT/2/3/8], then by topic/subject to illustrate Maclure's developing text. Rough hewn as they are it seemed a pity to lose them entirely and it may be that they will prove to be of some value to future researchers. |
