AdminHistory | The Socialist Teachers' Alliance (STA) was founded in 1976, borne out of frustration with the NUT for its insistence on being a professional rather than political union. It grew to become the largest left-wing grouping within the Union.
Its stated founding aims and principles were - - A Common System of Free Comprehensive Education from Nursery to Post-16; towards a new curriculum in the interests of the working class; towards working class control over education - Uniting Teachers; for full involvement of women in the union; for full involvement of Black teachers in the union; for full involvement of gay/lesbian teachers in the union - Alliances; teachers must become an integral part of the trade union movement; teachers must develop common policies with other workers; to combat Conservative ideas of parental choice - A Democratic Union - An Internationalist Union - For The Building of a Genuine Broad Left within the NUT
Its original organisational structure was - - to be funded by membership subscriptions - to elect an Executive Committee at an AGM - to elect an Editorial Board for the journal Socialist Teacher - to have a National Co-ordinating Committee which would meet meet every half term and be open to all - to produce an internal bulletin to give members information about events and to discuss opposing ideas
