| Description | Address from Hevrat Somekh Noflim u-Gemilut Hasadim, Polotsk, Vitebsk region, Russia on Montefiore's 100th birthday. Describes how about 80 residents of Polotsk gathered in the synagogue (called Bet ha-Midrash shel ha-G[aon] Epshtain) and voted unanimously to establish a charity association in the honour of Moshe Montefiore and appoint him as the honorary chairman of the association. The first line of the header gives the location and date of the testimonial (in the form of a chronogram). The second two lines are curved in a form of an arc within which, in the centre, there are six rhythmic lines. Signed and stamped by officers of the association. The chronogram corresponds to the date 640 [1879 or 1880], but the Association's stamp gives the date of its foundation as 5 Heshvan 645 [27 October 1884, Montefiore's birthday]. |
