<p>The text on the recto is psalm 49: 1-22. The first portion is missing but the first clearly visible word is "terram", i.e. "[Psalmus Asaph Deus deorum Dominus locutus est et vocavit] terram...". The leaf has been roughly cut down the left-hand side and the beginning of each line is missing. The text on the verso is Psalm 50:3-21, beginning "Miserere mei deus secundum...". The left-hand side of the text is visible on this side and there is a red capital at the start of each new line. The right-hand edge of each line is missing.</p>
<p>There are pencil annotations at the top of recto and verso indicating that the text is from the Psalms. The remains of an annotation in ink can be seen in the top right corner of the recto, possibly "Ps49". Also on the verso there are three squares in black ink that resemble square musical notation, possibly an imprint from another manuscript.</p>
The parchment has been torn along its left-hand edge and cut on all other sides, with loss of text from the top and right-hand side. It is creased and very discoloured, with pest damage and accretions of paste and leather. The main body text has survived well on the verso although the red capitals have faded to orange. The original text in the bottom third of the recto has worn away or been erased and a different hand has written the text again over the top(?). 204x134mm. |
