NotesDartington Hall School near Totnes, Devon, England, was based in a medieval hall. In 1925 the hall was bought by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst. In 1926 they opened the hall as a coeducational boarding school where the children learnt through activities on the estate. In later years the school became more academic but retained progressive ideas. Due to various factors the school suffered a drop in numbers in the 1980s and it closed in 1987. The hall continues to be connected to education through international summer schools.
