TitleSecond Generation Study: 'Manual of Routine Clerical Procedures'
Date[1969-1981]
DescriptionA file entitled 'Manual of Routine Clerical Procedures' used in the Second Generation Study, a sub-study of the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD). The file begins with a Medical Research Council (MRC) document, 'Brief description of questionnaires used in the study', regarding the NSHD as a whole (1946-1977). The file is then divided into the following sections:

a) 'Procedures for Distributing Interviews'. This section includes: instructions; forms; template letters; blank questionnaires for use when the children were aged 4, and aged 8; NSHD tests for children on reading and word comprehension; and consent forms.

b) 'Procedures for Dealing with Returned Questionnaires'.

c) 'Interviewer Claim forms'.

d) ‘Procedures for Dealing with Taped Interviews’.

e) 'Sending out School Questionnaires / Dealing with School Questionnaire Returns’: template letters to headteachers; a booklet providing an introduction to the NSHD and the Second Generation Study; blank questionnaires for headteachers; and administrative instructions.

At the end of the file there are also some documents and handwritten notes on how to trace members that the study has lost touch with, and how to process replies to the annual birthday card that the NSHD sends out to all study members.
