The letters have been described below in these groups.</p> <br></br> <p>Letters covering the period June 1885 - December 1885, on the first meeting of the Men and Women's Club where Karl read a paper on "The Woman's Question" including her notes, on sexuality and prostitution, about F Henrietta Müller's proposed paper and keenness to meet Karl before her first club meeting, on her delight at speaking to Maria Sharpe on women's rights, praising Maria's "open mind", about remarks made in other circles about the members of the club, on F H Müller's criticism of the club, about a meeting of the "New Life Society" in December 1885, and about James Hinton's "degrading" view of women.</p> <br></br> <p>Letters covering the period January 1886 - June 1886, and comprises letters in January and February during her vacation in the Isle of Wight about club business, on her experience of vivid "terrible dreams" and describing one that involved Karl, news and views of their mutual acquaintances, on introducing Karl to her friends including Eleanor Marx Aveling, enclosing a poem titled "Hearsay" from <i>The Times</i> by L Agnes Jones on James Hinton, on sympathy for Miss Jones and not "giving herself out" in friendship, about de Montaigne's essay <i>On Friendship</i>, further discussion of points related to differences of the sexes, telling Karl not to marry, on "fashionable women" refusing to breastfeed for aesthetic reasons, and on the virtues of Edward Carpenter.</p> <br></br> <p>Letters covering the period July 1886 - December 1886, on the importance of touch to intellectual development, outlining the plot of a proposed book, on the relationship of sensory feeling and aesthetics, on sexual relationships, reassuring Karl on the originality of his recent work, letters to Karl in August and September whilst he was in Tirol and Switzerland, on parental care for the young in primates citing work by A E Brehm, enclosing a scheme for a two volume work with the title "Woman", on feeling "miserable" about Dr H Donkin, his depression, and her refusal to marry him, enclosing a programme of Progressive Association lectures, her idealism, on Harold Hinton, preparing a club paper on marriage, Karl's relationship with E Cobb and Schreiner's determination to work, telegrams on her departure from England in December 1886, Donkin's misunderstanding of her relationship with Karl, her platonic love for Karl, and enclosing a letter from Donkin to Karl about her.</p> <br></br> <p>Letters covering the year 1887, regarding Karl's meeting with Donkin, thanks him for positive thoughts on her allegories, apology to Karl and E Cobb, asking Karl not to write to her, desire to go to Italy, and encloses dried, pressed leaf from Florence.</p> <br></br> <p>Letters covering the period 1888-1895, on men's responsibility in fatherhood as a moralising force, letters from 1890 written after her return to South Africa, being a letter from May 1890 on Karl's marriage to Maria Sharpe (includes a note to Maria), Karl's influence on her, explaining reasons for deciding to end communication with Karl, a letter in March 1892 thanking Karl for a photo (of Sigrid), thanks for sending a book (possibly <i>The Grammar of Science</i>), and letter dated 1895 sending a photo of her husband, and asking for one of Maria and Sigrid.</p> |
