| AdminHistory | William Ernest Hopkins Metcalfe was born 25 March 1895, at Malton in Yorkshire, to William Rutter Metcalfe and Florence Rebecca Metcalfe (nee Hopkins). After the death of his father his mother later married James Myles Hogge, a British social researcher and Liberal MP, in York, 4 February 1905.
William attended Archbishop Holgate's Grammar School, before sitting his University of London Matriculation Examination in June 1912. He went on to study at University College as a Faculty of Arts student from 1913-1914. During that time he joined the Officer Training Corps and attended St Christopher's Working Boys Club Camp. In 1914 became Temporary Second Lieutenant of the 19th Division Royal Field Artillery at Bulford Camp, Salisbury Plain. He was later awarded the Military Cross, as reported in The Times, 3 June 1916. |
