TitleRacial discrimination legislation
Date1947-1964
DescriptionPapers regarding racial discrimination, and legislation to prevent racial discrimination in employment agencies. These papers appear to have been accumulated by Maurice Orbach, who at the time was a Member of Parliament in the UK, and the General Secretary of the Trades Advisory Council (TAC). In both of these roles he was involved in a campaign to introduce new legislation in the UK to prevent racial discrimination. Although Orbach’s main concern was antisemitism, these papers also cover discrimination against Irish people in the UK, and discrimination against Black people in the US.

This file includes:

- Maurice Orbach’s correspondence with the government, and with London County Council;
- Maurice Orbach’s correspondence with the Board of Deputies of British Jews;
- Maurice Orbach’s correspondence with international labour and civil liberties organisations;
- TAC papers including reports, memos, and two pamphlets entitled ‘Discrimination Against Jews in the Economic Field in Great the UK: A Study Prepared from its Records by the Trades Advisory Council’ (1945-55 & 1956-57);
- circulars and newsletters from other organisations;
- proceedings from the 1957 International Labour Conference in Geneva, including a text entitled ‘Statement by Mr. Maurice Orbach, MP, on behalf of the World Jewish Congress to the Commission on Discrimination of the International Labour Conference’;
- press cuttings regarding racial discrimination;
- copies of legislation against discrimination, from different countries;
- drafts of new legislation for the UK.
