AdminHistory | There were initially five standing committees which served the Council and Executive Committee, each of which was responsible for different areas of the Council's work. Membership of the Standing Committees was not restricted to members of the Council or to Professors of Heads of Departments. Each Standing Committee elected a Chairman and Vice-Chairman at its first meeting and thereafter annually. In 1973 this was changed so that the Chairman was eligible for re-election for up to three years.
Standing Committee A was established to deal with all matters concerning initial courses of teacher education including BEd degree courses but excluding post-graduate courses. It consisted of one representative nominated by each University, two by the ATCDE, and one additional representative nominated by the Cambridge Institute.
A new committee structure was established in 1993 when UCET and PCET (Polytechnics Council for the Education of Teachers) merged to form a new, larger UCET. Two new committees, the Initial Teacher Education (Primary) Committee and the Initial Teacher Education (Secondary) Committee were set up to deal with all matters of intital teacher training.
With Standing Committee B, Standing Committe A played an important role in the implementation of Circular 9/78 which required all entrants to courses of initial training be in the possession of O-Level qualifications (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics. |
