Description | Correspondence between the NUWT, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labour, Members of Parliament including Nigel Davies and Patricia Horsnby-Smith, Durham County Council, the National Association of Head Teachers and the National Association of Schoolmasters regarding decision of Durham Council to require teachers applying for extension of sickness benefit to do so through a union. This was seen as the imposition of a 'closed shop' policy and was opposed by all teaching unions. This covers: Protests from the NUWT about this action - protesting that it restricts teacher's freedom and a threat to the educational service in the country Decision of the NUWT to follow the course of the other unions and advise teacher's in Durham to hand in their resignation Referral of the case to the Board of Arbitration NUWT submission of points to the Board of Arbitration Opinions from NUWT Central Council members regarding next steps in the dispute with Durham Council Correspondence with NUWT members in Durham giving advice on how to respond to council instructions Correspondence with other teaching unions regarding the case Examples of other attempts to impose 'closed shop' systems elsewhere in the country Extracts from Hansard of discussion of the case in the House of Commons Press cuttings regarding the case and statements to the press from the Ministry of Labour |
