Description | The files in this series are mostly concerned with two campaigns in which the National Union of Women Teachers were involved.
The first was the campaign to count war service in the awarding of increments to women teachers, something which applied to male teachers already.
The second was the campaign for the restoration of teachers' wages. Teachers' pay was hugely affected by the post-war depression and in 1931 a government committee proposed a 20% cut in salaries. In the end a 10% cut was proposed by the Burnham Committee and agreed by the Government. The National Union of Women Teachers consequently fought a fierce (and ultimately successful) campaign to restore the wages.
This section was created as a series by either members of the NUWT, or library staff at IOE when the collection arrived in the 1960s. |
