AdminHistoryJohn Barron (1934-2008) was Assistant Lecturer, then Lecturer in Latin at Bedford College from 1959 to 1964, Lecturer in Archaeology at University College London from 1964 to 1967, and Reader in Archaeology and Numismatics from 1967 to 1971. He became Professor of Greek Language and Literature at KCL in 1971, in succession to R P Winnington-Ingram. He was Head of the Classics Department from 1972 to 1984, Director of the Institute of Classical Studies (University of London) from 1984 to 1991, and Dean of the University of London Institute of Advanced Study from 1989 to 1991. He became Master of St Peter's College Oxford in 1991, and held that post until his retirement in 2003.
