DescriptionPapers on education by writers other than Chadwick. Includes:
(1) School inspectors' reports, newspaper reports of the 1868 Education Conference in Manchester, newspaper report on School Board elections, printed circular: "Education for the People: Remarks on the new code; and suggestions for a better system" by Charles Girdlestone, 1868; various notes and memos on costs of schooling and teachers' pay; resports and letters from teachers in response to various proposals and newspaper stories; transcript of an interview with Thomas Crampton, Head Master of the Public School, Brentford, on the costs and benefits of teaching in large classes as opposed to smaller, with reference to the social classes of the pupils including the so-called 'ragged school class'. Also a copy of a legal case relating to teacher training (1860?).
(2) Papers on the Endowed Schools Amendment Bill; various press cuttings on education; reports for various boards; papers and cuttings relaing to compulsory education, school attendance rates (and fines for non-attendance); a table of comparative statistics of elementary education prepared by the United States Bureau of Education compiled from national reports of various countries worldwide and various other papers on comparative education.
(3) Papers on elementary schools, denominational teaching; a blank 'form of return for colonial schools exclusively or principally attended by native children'; copy of 'Sir William Petty's Plan for a System of Instruction Relative to the Business of the Marine Department, etc" by Samuel Bentham (Chatham, June 1779) on naval schools; newspaper cuttings on infant school teaching; various other papers on schooling systems with reference to social class, class size and other countries outside the UK.
