AdminHistory | Blackheath High School was opened on the 7 Jan 1880 in a new building designed by E R Robson on Wemyss Road. The first head mistress was Sarah Allen-Olney who was responsible for 68 pupils. By 1902 the school had opened preparatory department in 15 Montpelier Row know as 'Stone House', which from 1904 was also the home of the Domestic Science Department. In 1908 a new wing was added to Stone House with a kitchen and dress making room for the domestic science students and became the home of the sixth form. In 1912 the school began to issue its own Housewife certificate. In 1920 the school leased 28 and 29 Wemyss Road. In 1925 the school leased 14 The Paragon as the new home for the kindergarten. In 1934 the housecraft department became part of the sixth form and was no longer an independent department. During World War II the school was evacuated to Tunbridge Wells High School and was temporarily known as Blackheath & Tunbridge Wells High School. The junior school reopened in 1944 at 20 Montpelier Row. The school returned to London in September 1945 though many of the buildings had been severely damaged. Initially the whole school was based at Wemyss Road. In 1947 the junior school moved to 13 Morden Road. In 1994 the senior school moved into a purpose-built building in Vanbrugh Park, and a year later the junior school moved into the refurbished school on Wemyss Road. |
