AdminHistoryThe Girls' Public Day School Company opened a preparatory school for Gateshead High School in Newcastle-upon-Tyne at 3 Devonshire Terrace and 1a Eslington Terrace in May 1889 under head mistress Miss Cooper. In 1894 the preparatory school was closed and Central Newcastle High School opened at 1 Park Terrace in 1895 under head mistress Mary Moberly. In 1900 the whole school moved to a purposed built building at Eskdale Terrace, Jesmond. In 1907 Gateshead High School merged with the school. From 1917-1922 the kindergarten moved to 3 Eslington Terrace. In 1922, 78 Jesmond Road, which had been a boarding house since 1916, was converted into the junior school. During World War Two the school was evacuated to Keswick School. In 1942, St. Margaret's High School, Gosforth, merged with the school. The Seniors remained at Eskdale Terrace and the juniors were housed in 16, 18 and 26 West Avenue, Gosforth. In 1944 5 Eskdale Terrace was bought for the use of the school and was renamed Hiley House, after a former head mistress. In 1945 20 West Avenue was purchased for the junior school. Later in 1949 the school also purchased 3 Eskdale Terrace. Later the school bought Chapman House, Sandyford for the Junior School.

By 1913 the school offered teacher training in connection with Armstrong College of the University of Durham. The school also provided domestic science training for girls over 17 until the 1920s.
