DescriptionCorrespondence about Tunbridge Wells High School collected by the Secretary of the Trust, mainly with the head mistress of the school, local committee of management, members of the Council of the Trust, the Board of Education, the Kent Education Authority, and the Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. The correspondence mainly related to efforts by the Trust to prevent the closure of the school.
The correspondence has been arranged into several folders reflecting how the correspondence was arranged within the original large folder, including:
1) 26 Aug 1918 -12 Nov 1929 , including letters regarding the formation and later closure of advanced courses in science and mathematics for pupils over 17 run jointly with the Tunbridge Wells County School, 1918-1927; letters regarding the resignation of headmistress, Miss Byrne, in 1926; tables of the schools profits and loss accounts, 1922-1929; correspondence with the Board of Education regarding boarding houses attached to the school; minutes of a conference between the Trust and the Kent Education Committee regarding the future of Tunbridge Wells and Bromley High Schools and the possibility of having free places, 23 Apr 1929.
2) 14 Nov 1929- 18 Sep 1933, including letters regarding attempts to offer the school to other bodies; closure of the boarding house; the local Tunbridge Well Borough Council offer to subsidise the school with the fees of 12 free placers; and letters regarding free places offered by the school.
3) 10 Nov 1933-21 Nov 1934, including letters regarding opinions of the members of the Council of the Trust on the proposed closure, 1933; and letters regarding the renewal of the lease of the Cambridge House premises.
4) 16 Oct 1935-10 Dec 1936, including reports on events and numbers of pupils at the school from 1929-1934 presented at a meeting of the Council, 16 Oct 1935; letters regarding the Council's proposal to close the school in Jun 1936.
5) 16 Dec 1935- 4 May 1936, mainly regarding the decision of the local council to give a grant for five years to keep the school open.
6) April 1936-Jun 1936 mainly regarding the finalisation of the agreement with the local council, including a copy of the official agreement.
7) Nov 1937-1940, papers regarding the final closure of the school in Jul 1940
