TitleClapham Middle School (1875-1904)
Date1875-1904
DescriptionTwo pupil registers from Clapham Modern/Middle School.
Extent2 oversized volumes.
AdminHistoryClapham Modern School open on 3 May 1875 in a Clarence House on Clapham Common, the first suburban school opened by the Girls' Public Day School Company. The building was leased to the Company by Mr Gassiot on condition that the fees were kept low; therefore the school was opened as a modern/middle school rather than a high school. Changed its name to Clapham Middle School in 1894. Merged with Clapham High School in 1904 [though the history of the Trust by Laurie Magnus states that the school closed in 1898].
Though some published sources suggested that this school was actually the predecessor of Clapham High School the records show it was a completely separate school until it merged with the High School in 1904
