Title'Heads'
Date1874-2006
DescriptionSeries of files labelled 'Heads', which contain general files on names of head teachers and a file on each head appointed by the Trust from 1873. Mostly the papers are of a personal nature and contain generally contain information on the terms of service of the head teacher. Many files relating to heads appointed before 1950 were empty and have been removed from this list. The original file list can be found in GDS/15/3/1/1 and includes names of those files which were removed.

Most of the files are very small unless the head spent the rest of their teaching career within Trust schools. The very early files appear to have been artificially created at later date and contain isolated letters (which appear to have been taken from other series) as well as some biographical material. The files dating from the 1920s appear to be true personnel files with additional material taken from other filing systems. Files from this date generally contain letters about the head's application for the post, their salary and pension and their retirement. Many of these files contain very little information, except in cases where the head remained with the Trust until the end of her career. These files also contain isolated correspondence regarding the administration of the schools, mainly issues with staff or pupil and comments on school inspections. Files dating from the 1950s-1960s are very detailed and usually contain the head's initial application for the post. Files from heads who were in service from the 1970s also include papers regarding the head's progress meetings with the Council. Information in the files dating from the late 1970s is very minimal and mostly only contains the initial application for the post.

ArrangementThe files have been arranged as they were ordered in the boxes they were original held in and are roughly in date order by the year the head was first appointed.
