| Description | Files and volumes regarding Clapham High School, later Streatham Hill and Clapham, Training College. The later files do overlap slightly but were retained in the order in which we received them.
The college originated from a department to train teachers at Clapham High School, one of many attached to Trust schools, and a domestic science department for girls over the age of 15. In 1898 the school opened a Froebel Department to train kindergarten and elementary school teachers, which was later recognised by the Board of Education and the National Froebel Union. The domestic science department also developed into a training department and was followed by departments for art and post graduate teachers. When Clapham High School merged with Streatham in 1938, the Froebel and postgraduate departments moved to 28 Palace Road as the Clapham and Streatham Hill Training College. In 1939 the College moved to Brighton Technical College before moving to Guilford a year later, where the postgraduate department closed. The College returned to London in 1943 and in 1947 became a separate body from the school. The College was taken over by the London County Council in 1949, and later became the Philippa Fawcett Training College. |
