DescriptionPapers regarding the inter-school George Hallam prizes for Greek and Mary Gurney prizes for Latin which were run simultaneously from 1919. The prizes were awarded to the pupils who had achieved the highest marks in specially set exams to test their knowledge of Latin or Ancient Greek. The exams were also taken by pupils at Harrow County Girl's School up to the mid 1970s. Includes:
1) Historical papers, 1918-[1979], including papers regarding the formation of the prizes and the first examination, regulations 1922, typescript notes on the history of the prizes. Open
2) Papers regarding the endowment of the Hallam Greek Prize and the Hallam Imperial Prize, 1927-1928. Open.
3) General papers, 1959 -1972, including correspondence regarding alterations to regulations and exam papers; correspondence with examiners, Dorothy Appleton and Phyllis Winter; correspondence regarding the introduction of an examining board; conferences regarding the prizes in 1969 and 1971. Open.
4) CLOSED Examiners reports, exams papers and related correspondence, 1932-1977. 4 folders. Closed for 80 years under the Data Protection Act (1998).
5) CLOSED 1980s papers regarding proposals to drop the George Hallam Prize. All adminstrative papers are closed for 30 years.
