TitleMembers of the Council
Date1872-2005
DescriptionPapers and correspondence regarding members of the Council of the Trust arranged in alphabetical order. The content of the files varies and there is very little information on the first members of the Trust. After World War Two it appears the Trust actively retained correspondence with the members of the Council, mostly those who were Deputy Chairs. Largely the correspondence is personal but also features discussions regarding the business of the Trust. There are only a few items relating to members appointed after the mid 1990s. Many of the files from [1964-1985] contain the individual's entry from the 'GPDST Who's Who' which usually contains the dates they were connected to the Trust; membership of committees; education and employment details; membership of other organisations; family; and hobbies. The original file titles have been retained, therefore many early female members of the Council are referred to by their husband's name or initials.

ArrangementThis series was originally arranged into files relating to each member of the Council and then into alphabetical order. This series does not contain files on every member of the Council since 1872. Some files were found to be empty and were omitted from the list. Files on members of the Council who later became Chairmen can be found in GDS/1/3/7.

Files on Mary Gurney, Lady Stanley and Janet Sondheimer, had not been previously sorted into any series of the collection. This subseries appeared to be the most appropriate place for the files and they were integrated into the alphabetical sequence.

It appear that these files were largely artificially created taking material from the Trust's original filing system. Therefore any loose material found in the collection relating to members of the Council which was not part of a clear existing series was integrated into the appropriate file.
