TitleEducation Committee
Date1875-1983
DescriptionPapers of the Education Committee, including minute books, 1875-1948; and meeting papers and other supporting papers, 1956-1983. There are no minutes for the period 1882-1902. The Committee was founded in 1875 and reported directly to the Council. It was responsible for overall curriculum of schools; authorising the book lists for schools; teaching staff appointments; examinations; scholarships; time tables; student teachers; and additions to prospectuses; proposals for new schools; teachers salaries. Initially members of the committee were recruited from the Council. In 1884 the Examination (later Examination and Studies) and Teachers Sub-Committees were created to report to the Education Committee. From 1920 the Education Committee also contained representatives of the Local Education Authorities. In 1922 it was decided that each member of the Governing Bodies of the schools and the LEA representatives on the governing bodies should be members of the Council's Education Committee. The committee was retained through several reorganisations but from 1992/1993 the committee reported to the new Finance and General Purposes Committee.
