AdminHistoryIn 1983 the Policy Advisory Committee (see IE/2/PAC) was replaced by a new Academic Policy Committee.

It's main role was to act as an adviser of priorities to the Central Academic Board and to act as a link between the Central Academic Board and the Committee of Management (the Institute's governing body). With the proviso that it referred all matters with financial implications to the Committee of Management, it approved all teaching, schemes of study, research and examinations and nominated examiners, oversaw student admissions and made recommendations about academic posts, fellowships, prizes, honorary awards, the establishment or discontinuance of academic sections of the Institute and the academic policy of the Library. It was also responsible for maintaining good order within the Institute and for disciplinary action over students.

Membership was the Director, Senior Pro-Director, Librarian, Chairpersons of each Department, the Director of the Thomas Coram Research Unit (TCRU), the Chairpersons of the Sub-Boards of the Central Academic Board, ten elected lecturers, two student representatives and three academic staff nominated by the central Academic Board.

In 1986 the Academic Policy Committee established an Executive Commitee consisting of the Director, the Pro-Directors and five members elected annually from the Academic Policy Committee, including one student representative. This was formed to initiate discussion on matters of policy and to submit recommendations to the Academic Policy Committee, to deal with matters referred to it by that Committee and to deal with urgent business.

When the Institute was accepted as a School of the University in August 1987, under its new charter and statutes, the Senate became the formal academic authority of the Institute and replaced the Academic Policy Committee.
