AdminHistoryThe Sub-Committee on Teaching Practice reported to the Committee of Principals. It was established to 'consider the whole problem of teaching practice arrangements, with special reference to the coming expansion of training college work and long term policy'. Members were asked to prepare a report for discussion with the Conference of Local Education Authorities (see IE/2/LEA). The 'whole problem' was considered at a meeting held in December 1958, where they decided to ask the constituent colleges for information on their current teaching practice arrangements to try to form a picture of the present situation. - see IE/2/ATP/1

Alongside the Sub-committee a Working party on Teaching Practice was established in 1959 by the Joint meeting of the Committee of Principals and the Conference of Local Education Authorities to consider the whole problem of the teaching practice facilities within the Area of the Institute, particularly in light of the forthcoming expansion of the colleges. They were asked to consider in particular the principals on which schools might be used for teaching practice, the best method of allocating schools to colleges, and the questions of schools that were currently not being used in certain areas. As part of its report the working party recommended the Institute should set up a co-ordinating procedure to facilitate a balanced use of the teaching practice places available within in the Area Training Organisation. See IE/2/ATP/2.

In June 1965 the working party was reconstituted as the Advisory Committee on Teaching Practice June 1965 to advise the Co-ordinating Officer to examine problems and make proposals in connection with the rationalisation of teaching practice arrangements and to study the possibility of closer collaboration between schools and colleges. In 1965 the terms of reference were to examine problems and make proposals in connection with the rationalisation of the teaching practice arrangements, making sure that schools were not used by to many colleges (to be carried out in negotiation with the schools, colleges and local education authorities); and study the possibility of closer collaboration between schools and colleges, with special reference to the help that may be give by school staff in teaching practice and the development of closer relationships between individual schools and colleges - see IE/2/ATP/3

In 1971 the Council constituted an Advisory Committee on College / School Relations to examine problems and make recommendations in connection with the rationalisation of the teaching practice, and other school based activities subject to appropriate consultation; and promote research into the dissemination of information about current practice and promising innovation and to examine matters pertaining to college/ /school relationships with a view to extending their scope and increasing their effectiveness. It appears to have have been run alongside the Advisory Committee for teaching Practice until, at least, 1973. When government policy led to the end of the Area Training Organisations, the work of the committee dwindled, and it met only once a year. From 1980 it appears the annual meetings were cancelled due to lack of business - see IE/2/ATP/4. The Committee's work was closely aligned to that of the School Relations Office (see IE/2/SRO)
