AdminHistoryWhen the Institute adopted a new constitution in 1949 this Board was formed, ‘for the purpose of advising the Academic Board on all matters within the purview of that Board which relate to the central activity of the Institute'. Thus, it dealt with students admissions, the regulation of courses of study, research, and examinations for the Central Institute.

Initially it consisted of the Director, Professors and Readers of the Institute and ‘such Teachers of the Institute as the Senate may by regulation prescribe' including four nominated by the Academic Board. In 1958 membership was extended to all members of staff of the central Institute who were recognised teachers and in 1961 all full-time members of academic staff became members and the Board was also allowed to co-opt other members of the central staff, including members of library and administrative staff. In 1963 all members of academic staff who were appointed for half-time or more were invited to attend as observers and in 1970 all part-time academic staff were given observer status. When a Dean was appointed to the Institute, he was also included and in 1971 three students of the central Institute were also allowed to attend. In 1984, pending the finalisation and approval of the Institute's Charter and Statutes, the Board adopted an interim role of advising the Academic Policy Committee.
