By the time of its abolition in 1984 (due to lack of requirements for its work) the University of Kent at Canterbury and the University of Surrey were also sponsors
The terms of reference were to: - review inservice and initial courses in Education currently offered by non-university institutions in London and the Home Counties and to receive proposals for new courses from such institutions - consider the extent to which existing and new proposals meet a clear need in terms of demand, geographical distribution and education priority, in light of available resources - propose where appropriate the rationalisation of existing courses and of new proposals, having regard to any comparable courses existing or proposed in the university sector to achieve the most effective and economical use of resources - to make recommendations to the Department of Education and Science and to other such bodies as may be appropriate.
Membership comprises an officer from each of the: local education authorities which maintain teacher education institutions in the region - 12 members voluntary providing bodies - 3 members validating bodies i.e. CNAA, University of London, University of Sussex teacher education institutions - 8 members teachers - 11 members Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Regional Advisory Council - 3 members co-options (2 members)
It established two sub committees: Initial Training Sub Committee (IE/2/TEC2) and InService Sub Committee (IE/2/TEC/3) to consider both aspects of teacher training provision.
By 1984 there were no meetings of the main committee, or the initial teacher training sub committee. Although the inservice sub committee had continued to meet the decision was made to wind up the work of all committees. |
