AdminHistory | Under the Scheme for the Institute, the University carried out a programme for the visitation of those institutions which applied for admission as constituent colleges and the regular visitation of those already admitted. Four or more visitors were appointed for each visitation including a Professor of Education from within the University, a Teacher of the Institute, a College Principal and an external visitor. Later, a practising teacher was also included. Each visitor produced their own individual reports which were amalgamated into the final report as submitted to the Visitations Sub-Committee of the Council. From here it was passed on to the University Senate and then formally communicated to the college authorities. The administrative work for the visitation process fell to the Institute Secretariat.
According to the Scheme for the Institute, the visitation report had to cover the following areas: constitution of the governing body; statutes or other instruments by which it was governed; suitability of buildings and equipment; number, qualifications, remuneration and conditions of service of staff; arrangements to enable the academic staff to formulate and express a corporate policy on academic matters and to take part in the management of the institution; the standard of instruction and research and the conditions as to the age and attainments qualifying students for admission; the number of students pursuing courses of study for a qualification within the purview of the Council or the University. The preliminary information supplied by the College authorities and the final visitation reports thus include details of these and related subjects including the foundation and development of the college; its constitution and administrative structure; buildings, physical location, accommodation and equipment; details of staff, including qualifications, experience, subjects taught, research and other activities, and salary; facilities such as the library, housing, recreation and corporate life; courses of instruction provided; conditions of admission and methods of selection of students; number of students. |
