AdminHistoryL. J. (John) Lewis headed the Colonial Department from 1958 to 1973. He was a scientist and former student, and had also served in various relevent posts while in Nigeria. For nine years he worked at St. Andrews Training College in Oyo and was also the principle of the Church Missionary Society Grammar School in Lagos. In accepting this post he suceeded H. L. Elvin. During his tenure, the department saw a significant rise in female students which was a development that Lewis was keen to encourage. Lewis also served as the director at the Intitute of Education of University College of Ghana.
