AdminHistoryThe committee was established in [1959] to provide academic leadership on an Institute-wide basis. Originally it was called the committee of professors, although from 1974 the name meeting of professors was adopted. Both names were used concurrently for a number of years.

As at September 2010 the committee's terms of reference were to: provide academic leadership on an Institute-wide basis and to advise the Director and Senate thereon; monitor regularly the criteria for conferment of the title of Professor and Reader and, where appropriate, to propose to Senate and Council modifications to these criteria; consider applications for conferment of title made in accordance with current procedures approved by Council and to recommend to the Director, through the Core Steering Group or other designated body, whether or not a title should be conferred; and nominate external experts for applications for promotion to Senior Lecturer and Research Officer Grade III or above.

Membership encompasses all those currently employed by the Institute of Education who hold either a University of London chair or on whom the title of Professor has been conferred by the Institute following its procedures for conferment of title. Professors emeriti may attend meetings but do not have voting rights. The meeting receives administrative support through the office of the Institute Secretary and the Secretary attends all formal meetings ex officio. A Chair and a Deputy Chair are elected by its members for a term of three years; nominations for which are made to the Secretary by a proposer and seconder, both to be current members of the Meeting. The Chair is an ex officio member of Senate.
