AdminHistoryThe Social Science Research Unit (SSRU) was established in October 1990 and was originally located in the Department of Policy Studies. It was partly funded by the Department of Health. It drew together researchers with wide experience and expertise in the fields of health and education. It was concerned with social and cultural analyses of policy and practice issues in the fields of education and health. Major themes of the Unit's work were the exploration of social class, gender, ethnicity and language. In 2011 the Unit was based in the Faculty of Children and Learning.

The Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Coordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre) was established in 1993 to address the need for a systematic approach to the organisation and review of evidence-based work on social interventions. The work and publications of the Centre engage health and education policy makers, practitioners and service users in discussions about how researchers can make their work more relevant and how to use research findings.
