AdminHistoryThe Thomas Coram Research Unit (TCRU) was established in 1974 by Professor Jack Tizard with support from the Department of Health and Social Security, the Thomas Coram Foundation and other funding bodies. In 1980 the Unit was chose as one of the Economic and Social Research Council's designated research centres, although the bulk of its funding continued to come from the DHSS. It was created as part of the Institute of Education and its Director, Deputy Director and one Senior Research Officer were tenured staff of the University of London.

The Unit carries out research related to children and young people in and outside their families. This includes care, education, health and social service settings and mostly in the areas of: children and young people's workforce and services; parenting and families; and promoting children and young people's health and wellbeing.
