DescriptionManuscript deeds written in English.
Extent23 items
AdminHistoryThis collection ranges from the 17th-19th centuries and has examples of many of the most common types of deed from this period. It was found with a piece of the old packaging addressed to Sir Hilary Jenkinson, and was probably used as a teaching collection for the archive studies course at UCL. The deeds themselves appear to have come from at least two deed bundles, as several relate to the same properties and show how they changed hands over time.
AcquisitionFound with a large piece of cardboard, presumably salvaged from the old box, which has a label addressed to "Hilary Jenkinson, Esq., Public Record Office" and annotated by him "Collection of Deeds deposited 8.7.22 HJ". Also found with some index cards which relate to some of the deeds. There are more index cards than deeds.
ArrangementBroadly in chronological order, except those deeds that relate to the capital messuage Barton Farm and the demesne lands of Membland in Devon (items 2-9) which have been grouped together for ease of use.
