Description | Parchment leaf. A "namenregister" comprising a list of names in two columns, mostly men but including a few women. It has been suggested that it is perhaps a list of those who have subscribed to a church, but there is no contextual evidence. Geographical names such as "van echternach", "van mettendorf" and "van badem" suggest that this list originated in western Germany, close to the Luxembourg border. The leaf is annotated "Anno 1514" at the top of the recto in a different hand to the main text, and "Anno d[omi]ni 1714" within the text. The discrepancy in dates may indicate that it was a blank end leaf in an earlier volume to which the list was added later. The verso has a very faint annotationin a later hand, possibly dated 1836. Old packaging was inscribed "Coblenz" (i.e. the German city of Koblenz?). |
